Conflicts are part of human nature.  Knowing how most effectively resolve conflicts is therefore an essential part of working and living.

There are roughly 5 styles of conflict resolution. Three are distinctly ineffective at resolving conflict.  These are associated with insecure attachment leading to emotional immaturity.  Effective resolutions to conflicted relationship rests on personal growth and development to emotional maturity.

Ineffective ways to resolve conflicted relationships

  • Avoiding – ignoring or pretending the conflict happened or exists
  • Capitulating – accepting or accommodating the other person’s point of view without adequately addressing one’s own
  • Competing – also known as standing your ground is driven by a need to win without adequate consideration of the other and their perspective

Effective ways to resolve conflicted relationships

  • Compromising – occurs when both sides look for common ground negotiating on larger issues and letting smaller ones go
  • Collaboration – is the most effective conflict resolution style because it involves thinking creatively to resolve the problem without concessions.
