School Success Test
When we think of school success testing, the SAT and ACT come to mind as markers of school success. They have become necessary for college entry and touted as indicators of post-secondary graduation. Canadian universities however ignore SAT and ACT scores and instead use high school grades as college success indicators.
Canadian higher education seems to be on to something. A research study conducted by the UChicago Consortium and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation into standardized testing versus grades found that high school grades were the best predictor of post secondary school success and college graduation. In fact they discovered those with highest standardized test scores were often less likely to succeed in college.
So what matters more than standardized test scores for school success? Testing scores in school settings. In general test scores are correlated with educational attainment and what the Calder Council calls ‘labor market outcomes’. Labor market outcomes are employment, work experience and occupational choice. Cognitive skills as represented by test scores are directly related to ‘later life outcomes’ – higher test scores translates into higher societal outcomes. Test achievements also reflect learning outside school settings and more importantly supportive families and communities. A long term study into the “smartest high school graduates in the 1940’s found that later life success markers were directly impacted by home life supports.
School Success Test as Intervention
Interventions that move the needle on test scores are therefore important.
Those that have the greatest impact are Here is a quick list of what matters more to school success in a summation of studies authored by the Calder Council: Students who are assigned to highly effective teachers in elementary school are more likely to attend college and earn higher salaries. • Significant benefits of an increase in school spending on both test scores and adult outcomes. • Attending a high-performing charter school not only increases test scores, but also significantly reduces the likelihood of engaging in risky behavior. • Students who are assigned to classrooms with higher quality peers have higher college attendance rates and adult earnings.
Other studies found: Awareness of learning styles motivated students to adapt other learning strategies and use mixed methods for learning (article) • Significant difference between the mean of the final exam scores in students with and without visual learning style preference (p = 0.03), with the former having higher mean scores (article) • Findings imply that low interest always leads to lower learning concentration (article) • Aptitude, self-regulated learning and motivation accounted for approximately 15.2% of variances in academic achievement (article) • Intelligence tests are also a form of aptitude test which designed to measure a person’s ability to learn (article) • Ability measures and prior high school scores were predictive of academic performance (article)
